Filling the Gaps

In light of increasing environmental concerns and rising energy costs, prospective homeowners are searching for eco-friendly and pennywise methods to lower utility bills while reducing their carbon footprint. There are many "green" products for consideration during construction but one of the best options is premium insulation, an important yet readily overlooked element in the homebuilding process.

"Spray foam insulation is the best option for slashing energy consumption and costs as well as creating a healthier living environment," said Kurt DeRuiter, owner ofUrban Home DeRuiter Insulation, the ultra energy-efficient consulting and insulation specialist in the Austin area. "It is key in promoting the well-being of the family, community and Earth."

DeRuiter uses SEALECTION® 500, an open cell semi-rigid spray-applied polyurethane foam insulation that expands to 120 times its volume within seconds, filling every nook and cranny for a perfect fit, even in hard-to-reach areas. This reaction creates an air-tight barrier that controls air movement through walls and impedes moisture entrapment.

Consequently, energy otherwise lost is more easily contained. Heating and cooling costs can be cut by 40-60 percent while energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced through decreased demand on HVAC units. SEALECTION® products are non-toxic, and, when used in conjunction with proper mechanical ventilation, they significantly improve indoor air quality, reducing dust, mold and mildew to create a clean living climate.

"The benefits of SEALECTION® 500 are undeniable. My clients have realized substantial savings - one reports yearly electricity costs under $240. I've been so impressed, I used it in my own home," said Joe Bennett, owner of Joseph M. Bennett Architects.

Urban Home Though more expensive than conventional insulation, the comparison is like the proverbial apples and oranges. "A home with spray foam insulation requires a significantly smaller HVAC system to stabilize temperature. When you take this into account, along with dramatically reduced energy bills and the added value to the home, your upfront cost is recouped within the first year," said Johnny Luckenbach, owner of John Luckenbach Construction.

SEALECTION Agribalance®, an even greener option that utilizes vegetable oils in its composition, is also now available.

"Today's homeowners must shoulder greater financial and environmental responsibility than ever before. Installing spray foam insulation is an easy way to save money and reverse the damaging effects on our environment," said DeRuiter.
