A Sunroom for All Seasons

(SUMMER 2008) - As summer approaches, visions of leisurely hours spent with family and friends dance in many homeowners' heads. Converting porches into sunroom is an increasing trend that provides yearlong access to a space that offers natural light and panoramic views and is the ideal setting for relaxation and entertaining.

Urban Home Ed Dudley, owner of Case Handyman and Remodeling, explains that options for enclosing a porch or open patio are limitless. Clients may remain with the home's existing siding or remove the siding and add wood, Hardiplank®, Austin white limestone or even texturized drywall. "The outdoors is an extension of the home's décor and the sky is the limit in terms of design," he said. "For flooring, we can add hardwoods, tile and carpet - we can even etch and stain a photograph onto the concrete and create a work of art."

Some homeowners may not want a wall facing west in the summer, to avoid direct sunlight. Including longer, rather than taller windows may provide more privacy and light. "An important consideration is how to incorporate air conditioning ducking into the space," said Dudley. "If air conditioning is not feasible, then a small window unit and ceiling fans are a must. Sometimes height is a problem in sunrooms and choosing ceiling fans without a light kit works best. If this is the case, beautiful sconces can always be utilized for lighting."

The rise in popularity of sunrooms can be attributed to new design amenities such as skylights, arching windows, sliding doors, high performance glass and climate controlled air. "A well-designed sunroom inspires a feeling of openness from theUrban Home inside of the home," says Dudley. "Allowing more natural light into the house along with mixing the comforts of indoor living with the scenic outdoors are two of their strongest attributes."

When delving into the world of outdoor remodeling, choose your remodeling contractor wisely. Research is paramount. Call the Better Business Bureau to inquire about recent complaints on the company. Ask specific questions, such as the company's length of time in business, association memberships and contact names. Get everything in writing. Request work samples and warranty policies.
Avoid buyer's remorse by spending the time locating a remodeler who shares your attention to detail, work ethic and who understands your vision. It will make a huge difference when summertime rolls around.
