Furnishings That Take the Heat

Central Texans love their backyards. Whether it's basking next to a tranquil waterscape or kicked back in an elaborately designed outdoorUrban Home kitchen, this is a space where quality fabrics and furnishings are often neglected. Investing in a skilled designer who understands our harsh climate will prove a valuable homeowner investment.

"People drop serious cash on creating luxurious outdoor areas, then skimp on the design aspects," said Jared Story, owner of Designs of the Interior (DOTI) in Austin. "It's important to include design in the budget so that the finished product is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and scaled properly. Many homeowners don't realize how a designer can give their visions life."

Story recommends investing in quality design materials meant for the outdoors. "Buy metal furnishings, such as aluminum and stainless steel for the product's longevity and durability. Metal is ideal because it's a renewable resource that can withstand the punishing Texas heat."

If wicker and teak is preferred, Story suggests considering pieces coated with higher-end resins. "When the ultraviolet rays hit the furniture, toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fumes are emitted, stressing the material and leading to a much faster breakdown," he said.

Urban Home Copper continues to be a popular outdoor metal, due to its aging capabilities. "Copper's patina (fine coating of oxide on the surface of the metal) makes it possible for it to constantly shine when polished," said Story. "Its timeless quality is utilized in accents and artwork throughout the industry."

Fabrics play an important role in creating a fully functional outdoor room. Decorating with an indoor fabric is not wise, as its first introduction to chlorinated pool water will ruin its appearance. "Outdoor fabrics have made leaps and bounds in that they now maintain the appearance of fine indoor material with much more weather resistance," said Story. "Once again, buying quality fabrics designed to take abuse is key in mildew and sun resistance."

As homes continue to extend into the backyards, homeowners should consider the image they wish to portray. "It's a shame to spend so much time and effort creating a luxurious outdoor environment, only to furnish it with inexpensive tables and chairs that don't match," said Story. "Hire a professional who can provide valuable insight to transform your backyard into a special retreat."
